Zur Destillerie:
"Die schöne Niederung an der breiten Bucht", so Laphroaig übersetzt, ist gesegnet mit dem Fluss Kilbride, welcher das mineralische Wasser für die Herstellung des Whiskys zur Verfügung stellt. Die Destillerie verwendet zu ¼ hauseigenen Torf.
Einer der größten Unterschiede zum Torf vom Festland ist, dass die Flora, durch die der Torf entsteht, hauptsächlich aus Heidekraut, Flechten und Moos besteht. Diese verleihen Laphroaig seine kräuterartigen, maritimen Eigenschaften, die für die Insel und den Whisky charakteristisch sind. Die meisten der Destillate reifen in amerikanischer Weißeiche, Ex-Bourbon-Fässern, welche von Maker’s Mark in Kentucky hergestellt werden.
Wer keinen Durchschnitts-Whisky trinken möchte ist hier richtig: schwere, recht ölige Malts mit medizinischen, maritimen & fruchtig bis süßen Aromen.
Die 10-jährige Original Abfüllung ist die Grundlage für alle Whiskys, welche mit jedem Schluck die Natur von Islay repräsentiert. Sein rauer, dominanter Charakter wird aus gemälzter Gerste geschaffen, die zuerst über Torffeuer kalt geräuchert wird, was eine Seltenheit ist.
Nase: medizinisch-phenolisch, rauchig, eine Spur Seetang
Geschmack: öliger Körper, intensive Torfnoten, rauchig, süßlich-medizinisch, salzig
Finish: lang, trocken & ausgeprägt
Ausbau: in Ex-Bourbon-Barrels
