Zur Destillerie:
"Die schöne Niederung an der breiten Bucht", so Laphroaig übersetzt, ist gesegnet mit dem Fluss Kilbride, welcher das mineralische Wasser für die Herstellung des Whiskys zur Verfügung stellt. Die Destillerie verwendet zu ¼ hauseigenen Torf.
Einer der größten Unterschiede zum Torf vom Festland ist, dass die Flora, durch die der Torf entsteht, hauptsächlich aus Heidekraut, Flechten und Moos besteht. Diese verleihen Laphroaig seine kräuterartigen, maritimen Eigenschaften, die für die Insel und den Whisky charakteristisch sind. Die meisten der Destillate reifen in amerikanischer Weißeiche, Ex-Bourbon-Fässern, welche von Maker’s Mark in Kentucky hergestellt werden.
Wer keinen Durchschnitts-Whisky trinken möchte ist hier richtig: schwere, recht ölige Malts mit medizinischen, maritimen & fruchtig bis süßen Aromen.
Kurze, aber intensive Reifung: Der Quarter Cask lagert etwas mehr als 5 Jahre im Ex-Bourbonfass und anschließend 7 Monate im 125l kleinen Quarter Cask aus amerikanischer Weisseiche. Die kurze Zeit reicht, um dem Whisky die intensiven Aromen des Holzes zu übertragen, welche sich maßgeblich auf das Endprodukt auswirken.
Nase: Teerduft, fruchtig-tropische Anklänge, etwas Zitrus, holziger Torf, Asche
Geschmack: ergreifend, vollmundig mit fruchtsüßer Würze, viel Torfrauch, Seetang, fruchtige Noten
Finish: behält die Intensität und den Torfrauch, lang & würzig
Ausbau: Ex-Bourbon-Barrels und als Finish 7 Monate im 125l Quarter Cask aus amerikanischer Weisseiche
